Life Balance...Living with Contentment

Presented by: Molly Davis of Matters That Matter

On Wednesday February 20, 2008 at the Greek Cusina, twenty-two attendees listened to Molly Davis on the subject of Life Balance.  And we even took a break about 7:45pm to check out the lunar eclipse.

Molly Davis is a successful corporate trainer.  A gifted teacher, she combines practical strategies and real life stories with humor and heart.  For the past 12 years, she has engaged clients in participatory learning, leading to actionable results.

Her talk centered on the thought that Contentment is to be at peace with the CONTENTS of your life.

We started by making a list of the essential things that contribute to our sense of contentment and then discussing items as we felt comfortable with others at our table. Then we put a check mark next to the ones that we get enough of. Then we put a circle around the ONE that we knew we need more of.

"How to Spot an Effective Manager (and then become one yourself)" Highlights

October 16, 2007

Slides from workshop (in PDF)

On Tuesday October 16, 2007, thirty people attended the SWE Columbia River Professional Development event "How to Spot an Effective Manager (and then become one yourself)" by Niki Steckler, PhD.

Dr. Steckler started by defining what effective manager s do: They figure out what to do in apparent chaos of uncertainty, diversity, and interdependence; they develop and continually update agendas for the work unit to provide a framework to guide their action; and they get work done through others -- build and maintain large and diverse networks of relationships. And whom effective managers manage: Self, Subordinates (individuals and the team), Boss, Customers and Suppliers, Peers and "The Work" (and its context). She then defined some key characteristics of effective managers: Self-Aware, Positive, Connected, Creative, and Disciplined. As usual, Dr. Steckler provided examples and gave the audience some "homework" assignments to start putting these concepts into practice. The slides for this presentation are available on the SWE Columbia River website.

Niki Steckler is an Associate Professor in the Management in Science and Technology Department at the OGI School of Science and Engineering at Oregon Health & Science University. She holds a Ph.D. in Organizational Behavior from Harvard University. Steckler's expertise centers around mental models and influence without authority. Dr. Steckler has worked with organizations including General Electric Co., Goldman Sachs & Co., Harvard Business School, Honeywell Inc., and U. S. West Communications in various executive education and consulting capacities. Her recent National Science Foundation-funded research focused on communication and collaboration across organizational boundaries. The recipient of multiple teaching awards, Dr. Steckler also volunteers with AWSEM (Advocates for Women in Science, Engineering, and Mathematics), a program to help teenage girls learn about careers in science.
